Microhydro: Clean Power from Water
Hydroelectricity is the world’s largest—and cleanest—source of renewable -energy. But despite lively interest in renewables generally, there is an information vacuum about the smallest version of the technology dubbed "the simplest, most reliable and least expensive way to generate power off grid." Highly illustrated and practical, Microhydro is the first complete book on the topic in a decade. Covering both AC and DC systems, it covers principles, design and site considerations, equipment options, and legal, environmental, and economic factors.Scott Davis has decades of experience operating, installing, designing, selling, and teaching about microhydro technology. An award-winner in the field, he currently works as a system designer and retailer with an alternative energy company for whom he has authored an on-line microhydro course.List Price: $ 22.95Price: $ 13.79

Serious Microhydro: Water Power Solutions from the Experts
Waterpower is the largest source of renewable energy in the world today, and microhydro is a mature, proven technology that can provide clean, inexpensive, renewable energy with little or no impact on the environment. Serious Microhydro brings you dozens of firsthand stories of energy independence covering a complete range of systems, from household pressure sites to higher pressure installations capable of powering a farm, business, or small neighborhood. Topics include: Low head and medium head sites AC-only systems as well as ones using a battery/inverter subsystem Stand alone power supply or grid intertie setups Hybrid systems (combined with photovoltaics or wind) With all the variables involved in microhydro, there is no “typical” system. These case studies represent the most comprehensive collection of knowledge and experience available for tailoring an installation to meet the needs of a site and its owner or operators. If you are considering building a system, you are bound to find a wealth of creative solutions appropriate to your own circumstances. Serious Microhydro shows how scores of people are achieving a high standard of living from local energy sources with a minimal ecological footprint. It has particular appeal to homeowners, teachers, renewable energy professionals, activists, and decision makers who want to understand the technology from a “hands-on” perspective. Scott Davis is an award-winning renewable energy project developer with decades of experience operating, installing, designing, selling, and teaching microhydro technology. He is a founder and president of Friends of Renewable Energy BC, and the author of Microhydro: Clean Power From Water.List Price: $ 29.95Price: $ 14.00

21st Century Complete Guide to Hydropower, Hydroelectric Power, Dams, Turbine, Safety, Environmental Impact, Microhydropower, Impoundment, Pumped Storage, Diversion, Run-of-River (CD-ROM)
This unique electronic book on CD-ROM has a collection of federal documents and resources about hydropower, hydroelectric power, and related technologies such as dams, turbines, and microhydropower. Research and development activities of the Department of Energy is covered, with information on technology development, projects, history, safety, and environmental impact. There is also material from the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) regarding licensing, compliance, safety and inspections of hydropower and the hydropower industry. Coverage includes water energy resources, state assessment reports, and more. The hydrologic cycle provides the basis for hydropower –water constantly moves through a vast global cycle, in which it evaporates from lakes and oceans, forms clouds, precipitates as rain or snow, then flows back to the ocean. The energy of this water cycle, which is driven by the sun, is tapped most efficiently with hydropower. Diversion projects channel a portion of the river through a canal or a penstock and may require a dam. Impoundment hydropower uses a dam to store water. Water may be released either to meet changing electricity needs or to maintain a constant reservoir level. Pumped storage pumps water from a lower reservoir to an upper reservoir at times when demand for electricity is low. During periods of high electrical demand, the water is released back to the lower reservoir to generate electricity. Run-of-river projects utilize the flow of water within the natural range of the river, requiring little or no impoundment. Run-of-river plants can be designed using large flow rates with low head or small flow rates with high head. Microhydropower projects–produce 100 kilowatts (kW) or less. Microhydro plants can utilize low heads or high heads. Current hydropower technology, while essentially emission-free, can have undesirable environmental effects, such as fish injury and mortality from passage through turbines, as well asList Price: $ 25.00Price: $ 25.00
Planning and Design of Hydroelectric Power Plant Structures: Engineering and Design: USACE Engineer Manual
This manual presents a discussion of the general, architectural and structural considerations applicable to the design of hydroelectric power plant structures. It is intended for the guidance of those elements within the Corps of Engineers responsible for the planning and design of such structures. It should also be used in establishing minimum criteria for the addition of hydropower facilities at existing Corps of Engineers projects, whether by Corps of Engineers or a non-Federal developer.- United States Army Corps Of Engineers USACE
